چکیده
‘‘New Problems’’ resumes this month with the first of a series of problems from Kirk McDonald of Princeton University. ‘‘New Problems’’ continues to solicit interesting and novel worked problems for use in undergraduate physics courses beyond the introductory level. We seek problems that convey the excitement and interest of current developments in physics and that are useful for teaching courses such as Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics, ‘‘Modern’’ Physics, and Quantum Mechanics. We challenge physicists everywhere to create problems that show how their various branches of physics use the central unifying ideas of physics to advance physical understanding. We want these problems to become an important source of ideas and information for students of physics and their teachers. All submissions are peer-reviewed prior to publication. Send manuscripts directly to Christopher R. Gould, Editor.

O-20: Slow-Freezing-Induced Changes of Birefringent Structures in Human Oocytes Are Related to Responsiveness to Ovulation Induction
Background: The slow-freezing method is one of the most popular techniques to freeze human oocytes and it is also used in routine in vitro-fertilization (IVF) programs, particularly in those countries where embryo freezing is not allowed. Slow-freezing damages some of the structures of the egg, among which the meiotic spindle (MS) and the zona pellucida (ZP). Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) pe...
متن کاملThe Effect of Antenna Movement and Material Properties on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Two-Dimensional Metamaterials
Increasing development of nano-technology in optics and photonics by using modern methods of light control in waveguide devices and requiring miniaturization and electromagnetic devices such as antennas, transmission and storage as well as improvement in the electromagnetic tool, have led researchers to use the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and similar phenomena i...
متن کاملمطالعه نور کند در یک کامپوزیت متشکل از نانوذرات استوانهای هسته- پوسته تزریق شده در یک دیالکتریک
In this paper, slow light in a composite consisting of core-shell nanoparticles doped in a dielectric is studied. The light-velocity slowing factor as a function of the incident light frequency is discussed and analyzed. The influence of the thickness of shell, the composition of core and shell and the geometrical shape of nanoparticles on the slowing factor is investigated. The effect of the p...
متن کاملEnhancing the light-matter interaction using slow light: towards the concept of dense light
A couple of experiments are here presented to clarify the impact of slow light on light-matter interaction. The experiments are designed, so that the process generating slow light and the probed light-matter interaction only present a marginal cross-effect. The impact of slow light on simple molecular absorption could be separately evaluated under either material or structural slow light propag...
متن کاملTheoretical and experimental study of structural slow light in a microfiber coil resonator.
In this paper, a compact slow-light microfiber coil resonator (MCR) is fabricated and the slow-light properties of it are analyzed and tested. Based on coupled-wave theory, a theoretical model for describing the slow-light propagation in the MCR is established. Experimentally, the MCR slow-light element is fabricated and its relative slow-light time delay is measured. The group velocity of the ...
متن کاملDispersion-controlled slow light in photonic crystal waveguides
Slow light with a markedly low group velocity is a promising solution for optical buffering and advanced time-domain optical signal processing. It is also anticipated to enhance linear and nonlinear effects and so miniaturize functional photonic devices because slow light compresses optical energy in space. Photonic crystal waveguide devices generate on-chip slow light at room temperature with ...
